The Pursuit of the Perfect Model Train

The pursuit of the perfect model train has captivated enthusiasts for decades. Because it is such a wonderful way to spend spare time and express your artistic talents, it has been a wonderful hobby for millions. But, did you know that it is more then just the collecting of locomotives. That is just the beginning and the hobby also includes the construction of buildings, scenery, and characters. Also, you cannot forget the additional knowledge you will learn in regards to scales and gauges.

As you learn about the scale of the model trains, remember that it refers to the size of the model train to its larger, real prototype. There are many different types of scales to look for in the model train, and your careful consideration will have an affect on the size of the trains, the amount of track and space to build your perfect environment. The four most popular scales of model trains are G, O, HO, and N.  G scale which has a ratio of 1:22 and the O scale which has a ratio of 1:48 are grouped together into the larger-scale trains category.  They run on a No. 1 track.  HO scale has a ratio of 1:87 and OT is half the size smaller then the O scale.  HO literally stands for half an O.  The N scale has a ratio of 1:160 and is a half a size smaller then the HO scale.  There are many other smaller scales, but these four are, like I said earlier, the most popular and common.

As you listen to enthusiasts talk about the gauge, what they are referring to is the size of the track between the two rails. There are many different people and manufacturers out there, and it is important that everyone gets along and agrees upon a uniform size that would allow the trains and track to be interchangeable. The standard gauge is around 4 feet, eight and a half inches while a narrow gauge is around three to three and a half inches.

One of the most important aspects of the overall experience is the creation of the scenery. Train hobbyist place and run their trains through layouts that are designed and created to fit the artistic vision of the owner. Many times they include mountains, trees, bridges, valleys, hills, rivers fields and meadows. Planning where you are going to put everything is a creative and fun part of the experience and careful consideration should be given to the size of the space that is allocated to the project. The track should be laid in a way that allows the train to run in a continuous loop, whether it is a circle, oval, figure eight, dogbone shape or any other shape you decide upon. Make certain that the track allows the train to move smoothly so as not to derail the train.

Model train building and collecting is a huge hobby that many people, both young and old have gotten into. As you pursue this hobby, you will also realize that one of the most rewarding parts of the experience is sharing it with those you love and care about.
